The study found that dark chocolate was the best for boosting mood
Eating chocolate every day can actually be good for you, according to a new study.
According to research, daily consumption of at least 104 grams of chocolate with high cocoa content can improve your mood and help alleviate the symptoms of depression.
Those who ate a portion of dark chocolate every day during the study, conducted by University College London, have been shown to reduce the risk of depression by 70%.
Although dark chocolate had the most significant impact on mood, the study showed that those who ate chocolate of all kinds could benefit from a boost.
The compounds found in chocolate, flavonoids and phenylethylamine (PEA) stimulate the central nervous system and provide a well-being effect on the brain.
Approximately 14,000 adults participated in the study, conducted alongside scientists from the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services Canada, and published in the journal Depression and Anxiety.
"This study provides some evidence that the consumption of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, may be badociated with a reduced likelihood of clinically significant depressive symptoms," said Dr. Sarah Jackson, lead author.
She added that further research was needed to determine if there were reasons why people would be less likely to eat chocolate if they were depressed.
