A six-month-old baby in Bunia, eastern DRC, died of the Ebola virus, becoming the first victim of the disease in a provincial capital, the Ministry of Health said Thursday. .

Bunia, which has 300,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the province of Ituri. With the neighboring province of North Kivu, she has been battling an Ebola outbreak since last August.

The baby is among the 610 deaths out of 980, the ministry said in a statement.

"The parents are apparently healthy," he said.

"In-depth investigations are underway and will include, among other things, an badysis of bad milk to identify the source of contamination."

The ministry added that it had also recorded 97 new cases in the previous three weeks.

This increase "was expected" given the impact of an attack on two Ebola treatment centers by armed groups in the region in crisis, he added.
