The Upper East Region branch of the Ghana Association of Assembly Members [GAAM], threatened to boycott the approval of the president’s candidates for municipal and district chief executive positions in the region, if they are not paid ex gratia.
At a press conference in Bolgatanga, Assembly members said some of them had yet to be paid ex gratia after leaving office nearly two years ago.
The President of the Association, David Adoliba, who addressed the press conference said: “Some Assemblies still owe the Honorable Members of the Assembly their ex-gratia, two years after their mandate. We hereby ask these assemblies to urgently pay all overdue amounts before the confirmation of government candidates for the various MMDAs ”.
He revealed that Assembly members are expected to be paid between 1,000 and 1,500 GHC each for their four-year term.
The different amounts, he said, are to be paid depending on whether the members of the assembly worked respectively under a district assembly or a municipal assembly.
“As we speak, no Assembly in this region has paid [the ex – gratia] fully. Some are paying in small chunks and others have yet to pay, Adoliba said.
Among other things, the Upper East region branch of GAAM also wants President Akufo-Addo to consider introducing and implementing a fund for electoral zones that will be designated for elected members of the Assembly, so that they can carry out minor projects in their electoral areas.
“We want to call on the President, Nana Akufo Addo, through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, to consider introducing and implementing [an] Constituency Fund through which approximately 5% of the District Assembly’s common fund is directed to elected Assembly members to access it for minor projects such as gutter clearance, hall roofing class and emergency issues that may arise in the different electoral areas, ”said the members of the Assembly. at the press conference.
The Upper East Region Chapter of GAAM also reported that at least five District Assemblies in the region were without Presiding Members and that it was necessary to elect these Presiding Members before any business of the Assemblies, including the approval of MMDCE candidates can take place.
“We hope these appeals will receive the urgency they deserve. Otherwise, we will join our colleagues from other regions in boycotting the confirmation of MMDCEs if the government appoints them, ”concluded David Adoliba to the applause of his colleagues at the press conference.
