The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will establish a new register of voters for the 2020 presidential and legislative elections.

The decision was made following a stakeholder meeting held Wednesday under the auspices of the Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

In 2015, the EC rejected the proposals for a new voter register, calling it "unconvincing".

He concluded this after holding a forum following a heated debate over the register after the opposition neo-patriotic (NPP) party at the time had baderted that it was not a big deal. he had evidence suggesting that the register had been compromised with 76,000 non-Ghanaian voters.

There were several demonstrations, some of which became violent.

A group of experts was therefore formed to solicit the opinion of stakeholders on the desirability of establishing a new register or not.

Chairman of the committee, the late judge V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe recommended that EC not replace the voters register.

Stakeholders at Wednesday's meeting have now agreed to create a new registry.

They also agreed that the EC will hold the district level elections and referendum on the same day in the last quarter of 2019.

In the statement below, Jean Mensa, President of the Commission, explains in more detail what will be done before the 2020 elections.
