The Electoral Commission will abide by the court's decision on the exercise of limited registration of voters, said Vice President of Operations Samuel Tettey.

Due to an injunction from the court, the Commission had indefinitely suspended the limited voter registration exercise, which was scheduled to begin from Friday, June 7 to Thursday, July 27 in all of its district offices. and in 1,573 selected electoral zones across the country.

He said that the 1,573 selected electoral zones, which used biometric verification registration kits (BVR) for the exercise, constituted about 25% of the country's electoral zones.

He said the suspension of the exercise was due to a court injunction aimed at preventing the Commission from holding the limited voter registration exercise.

He explained that the Commission was well prepared for the limited voter registration process, which was part of its preparations for the holding of the referendum on the election of municipal chiefs. metropolitan and district (MMDCE) and district elections (DLE) scheduled for December.

"The Commission is in fact very well prepared, all the logistics needed for the exercise has been purchased. We have completed the training of all officials who must take part in the registration exercise, "said Mr. Tettey during his presentation at a multiparty conference on the upcoming referendum on the Election of MMDCEs.

The workshop was organized by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Ghana with funding from the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

Tettey said the Commission had taken the necessary steps to prepare for the December referendum on the election of the MMDCEs and the DLEs.

The Commission, he noted, was also guided by the constitutional threshold of 40%, who had to vote in the referendum and 75% who would vote yes.

He stated that Article 45 of the Constitution gives the Commission the mandate to educate the population on the electoral process and its purpose; stating that "with this in mind, the Commission would undertake vigorous education and public awareness for the public and voters".

He said they would organize more public commitments in the referendum with stakeholders such as civil society, the media, people with disabilities and faith-based organizations.

Mr Tettey said he badured Ghanaians that the Commission would ensure that the referendum was a success.

"We want to badure the brave people of Ghana that the Commission is ready and that it is making every effort to organize peaceful and orderly elections for the referendum on the election of the MMDCE, as well as the DLE", did he declare.

"A challenge that we expect is the one that existed before, because we only have the DLEs, which concerns the election of the members of the committees of the units and members of the Assembly. However, this election will be added in another election, the referendum. . Thus, in each polling station, instead of having two ballot boxes, which was the case previously in the DLEs, this time around the ballot boxes, there will be three. "

The three ballot boxes include a member of the Assembly, a member of the Unity Committee and the referendum.

He stated that in the past, the Commission has had a history of facing challenges in terms of participation as well as processes leading to voting. He therefore called on all stakeholders to contribute to voter education during the elections so that they know what to do. to do when they arrive at the polling station.

Regarding the referendum, Mr. Tettey said it would be a matter of yes or no, that the voters would decide.

He explained that with respect to the election of members of the Assembly, an elector should only vote for a single candidate of his choice. stating that with respect to the election of the Unity Committee, an elector had to vote for a maximum of five candidates.

"That's where the challenge lies. And this requires intensive voter education so that voters who go to the polling station do not mix up the ballots. "
