Economic Community of West African States Commissioner for Macroeconomic Policy and Research Kofi Konadu Apraku has denied claims that ECOWAS has not been proactive in addressing the root causes of political instability in the sub-region.
He reacted to a comment made by the ranking member of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, accusing ECOWAS of failing to proactively manage political instability in Guinea.
Speaking on the sidelines of an expert meeting on the final draft of the ECOWAS 2050 vision, Kofi Konadu Apraku said that ECOWAS is doing everything possible to restore a democratic regime in Guinea.
“ECOWAS has put in place early warning systems to monitor every country, including the more stable ones like Ghana. Unfortunately, things have turned out badly in Guinea, but we have not lost our responsibilities. We are at the top of our game. ”
“What happened in Guinea is very unfortunate, but we are doing all we can to restore constitutional order and stability.” ECOWAS suspends Guinea; demands the immediate release of Alpha Condé
ECOWAS leaders suspended Guinea “from all governing bodies of ECOWAS with immediate effect”.
This was in a statement released after an emergency ECOWAS meeting was held online on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
ECOWAS should also “immediately send a high level ECOWAS mission to Guinea to assess the situation”
He also demanded the unconditional release of Alpha Condé immediately by the putschists. The regional body also asked the military to ensure the physical security of the ousted president. Instability is mounting in West Africa, leaders must sit down – DK Osei
Retired Ghanaian diplomat DK Osei believes Ghanaians should be concerned about the latest case of political instability in West Africa following the coup in Guinea.
The political crisis and the threats of extremist elements in most West African countries led him to conclude that the indicators of instability in the sub-region “are very pronounced”.
Besides the coup in Guinea, there were two coups d’état in Mali and one attempt in Niger.
“For anyone in the sub-region to think this sub-region is very stable, we are in grave disillusionment,” Osei said on The Point of View on Citi TV on Monday.
Moving forward, he urged ECOWAS and the African Union to focus on measures that prevent instability.
