Accra, 31 May, GNA – Ministers in charge of
Mineral Development in the Economic Community of the States of West Africa (ECOWAS)
Thursday adopted a regional mining bill to regulate mining activities
in the subregion.

A two-day summit in Accra, after approval by the ECOWAS Parliament, would regulate
issuance of permits, mineral rights, licenses, establishment of
structures, local content regulations and the environmental and social impact

Resources, Mr. Kwaku Asoma-Cheremeh, who chaired the closing ceremony, said that the
document can be used, inter alia, to protect member States from
exploitation by foreign investors.
He said that would allow potential mining investors
understand that the sub-region was guided by a common mineral resource
rules and regulations that would increase income, open up youth
employment and help develop mineral-rich resource countries.
He cited South Africa as a clbadic example
as one of the countries of Africa that had developed its infrastructure with
mineral resources.

the Member States must help themselves and help the future generation ",
Asoma-Cheremeh said.

The ECOWAS Parliament will soon be sent to the Council of Ministers
including the ministers of finance and foreign affairs.
