A member of the New Patriotic Party’s communications and legal team suggested that the administrative errors of the Election Commission (EC) had not overturned the will of the people.
Nana Adjoa Adobea Asante said the numbers that made up the filling of the votes, as claimed by the NDC, were not significant enough to change the outcome of the 2020 election.
“When there is a difference of about 500,000 voters, how can 5,600 votes materially change the outcome of the election?” she said on the Super Morning Show on Friday.
The comment comes after the Supreme Court ruled against petitioner John Mahama in the 2020 election petition on the grounds that the petition presented to the court “has no merit.”
Former President John Mahama asked the Supreme Court to challenge the December 2020 poll result on the grounds that the election was “flawed and fictitious”.
The petitioner further alleged that the Election Commission increased the votes in favor of the ruling NPP.
This assertion was based on a subsequent declaration of the election results by the EC after an initial declaration.
However, the NPP’s legal team refuted the allegations, insisting that President Akufo-Addo won the election with a majority of votes cast in his favor.
“When the calculations [of the election results] were returned to court, at any time, Johnson Asiedu Nketia [PW 1] reached the threshold of more than 50% for Nana Akufo-Addo.
“As such, the tribunal said that you cannot fix yourself on the mistakes and that it is wrong to do so, but use the corrected figures which have been released by the EC.
“And when the EC data was used, the numbers clearly and abundantly showed that Nana Addo Dankwa had reached the 50% + threshold,” the lawyer said.
