Ed Woodward regrets that Manchester United did not sign Virgil van Dijk before Liverpool and is now ready to invest heavily to improve the defense of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reported information.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best central defenders in the world in Liverpool, who signed the contract with the Dutchman for a £ 75m contract with Southampton in January 2018.

United would have made an ultimate bid for Van Dijk while he was still playing at Southampton, but he had been told that an agreement had already been reached with Liverpool.

And according to the Evening Standard, Woodward is "sad" about United's disappearance of Van Dijk and believes that the deal with Liverpool has become a "market".

The report also states that the £ 75m contract between Liverpool and Van Dijk has convinced Woodward that United should be ready to spend big on new defensive rookies.

And the US chief also believes that Manchester City's decision to get Kyle Walker to sign more than £ 50 million was a turning point for clubs paying high fees to the best defenders.

An offer of £ 40 million for Aaron Wan-Bissaka has already been rejected by Crystal Palace, but United is about to follow up on the offer with an increased offer.

United is also interested in signing Harry Maguire but Leicester City is asking £ 90 million for the English international.

United has also proposed to make Matthijs de Ligt the highest paying teenager with a contract bid of £ 350,000 a week, but Ajax's center back is about to refuse a move to Old Trafford.
