Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an easy-to-listen musical intervention on satisfaction, anxiety, pain, sedative and badgesic drug needs, and physiological parameters at home. Chinese adult patients undergoing colonoscopy in Hong Kong. Patients and methods: Patients undergoing colonoscopy, aged 45 years and older, able to communicate in Chinese and hemodynamically stable were invited to participate in the study. A randomized controlled trial was adopted. Eligible patients were randomly badigned to either a
music group, which received standard care and additional music easy to listen to (a series of 15 non-rock popular Chinese songs) through headphones and MP3s for 20 minutes before and during the procedure, or to a group control only receiving standard care. Standard care
includes all nursing and medical care provided to patients undergoing colonoscopy. Measures including an inventory of characteristic anxieties, badog visual scales of pain level, satisfaction of pain procedure and treatment, use of sedative and badgesic drugs, heart rate and blood pressure data were were collected initially (T0), during (T1) and 30 minutes after the procedure (T2). Results: Eighty participants (40 musicians vs. 40 witnesses) completed the study without attrition. Participants in the music group reported significantly higher levels of satisfaction with the procedure (p = 0.043) and satisfaction with pain treatment (p = 0.045) than those in the control group. No significant differences were observed between the groups regarding anxiety, pain,
sedative and badgesic use, heart rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p> 0.05). Nevertheless, most participants appreciated the songs provided in MP3 and found it helpful to relax during the procedure and would have preferred it again (p <0.001). Conclusion: Easy listening can improve patient satisfaction during the procedure and pain relief in adults undergoing a colonoscopy procedure.
