Egypt to host African summits on Sudan and Libya on Tuesday

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will hold two emergency summits Tuesday with other African leaders to discuss events in Sudan and Libya, his presidency said.

Leaders will focus on "the changing situation in Sudan", where protests continue after the army overthrew President Omar al-Bashir.

They will also seek to "stem the current crisis" in Libya, where the commander Khalifa Haftar is conducting an offensive on Tripoli, said the Egyptian presidency in a statement.

Sisi is also the current president of the African Union.

He will receive Chadian President Idriss Deby, Rwandan State President Paul Kagame, Congolese citizen Denis Sbadou-Nguesso, Somali Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and South African Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as Dijbouti leader Ismail Omar Guelleh .

The planned summits are the first summoned by African leaders on the current crises in Sudan and Libya.

For Sudan, the goal "is to discuss … the most appropriate ways to deal with the changing situation and contribute to stability and peace," said the Egyptian presidency .

On April 15, the AU threatened to suspend Sudan if the army did not pbad power within 15 days after that date to a civilian authority.

Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, is also expected to participate in discussions, along with representatives from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria.

Another summit on Libya, which will bring together Rwandan, South African and Congolese leaders in Sisi, will be on the theme of "reviving a political process … (and) the elimination of terrorism". declared the Egyptian presidency.

The so-called Libyan national army of Strongman Haftar launched on April 4 an offensive against Tripoli, the nationally recognized national agreement headquarters of the government.

Egypt is a powerful ally of Haftar, also supported by the United Arab Emirates and – according to the White House – consulted by US President Donald Trump on a phone call last week.
