Dr. Cheryl Brunton, Medical Officer of Health, said that all patients had pre-existing medical conditions – before they died of complications from the flu.

She added that flu-like illness rates and badociated hospital admissions remain above average for this time of year.

According to Brunton, people over 65 and pregnant women – who can still be vaccinated – are the most at risk for serious illness or flu-related complications.

Influenza-related diseases cause about 400 deaths a year in New Zealand, or 45% of sick days each winter.
