Eighteen women with disabilities from the Eastern Region have been trained in pearl making to improve their livelihoods.

The training was funded by DANIDA, in collaboration with the Ghana Society for the Physically Handicapped (GSPD) and Krobodan, a Danish / Krobo non-governmental organization based in Koforidua, which aims to empower women with disabilities.

The beneficiaries came from four districts in the region – New Juaben, Okere, Akuapem North and Manya Krobo – and were trained for weeks.

They received starter kits and money to start their own business.

At the graduation ceremony, Mr. Daniel Agyekum, regional coordinator of the GSPD, said that most women had no means of livelihood, which made them vulnerable, hence the training they received. to make a living.

He said that last year, thanks to this collaboration, six women with disabilities had been trained, but with the support of DANIDA, their number rose to 18 and the Krobodan group was commended for facilitating the program.

Ms. Eku Sika Addo, President and Founder of Pbadion for the Ministry of Mother and Child, special guest, urged women to effectively use the skills acquired to become self-reliant.

She advised them not to be self-pitying and inferior because they were behaviors that might prevent them from doing something meaningful for themselves and their families. .

She urged them to educate their children, especially the girls, so that they become badets for society rather than begging with them on the street.

Mrs. Beatrice Yeboah, Regional Treasurer of the GSPD, appealed to the various District Assemblies, where the beneficiaries were selected, to provide them with practical spaces for their pearl making transactions, as they could not move to sell their products.
