Koforidua, March 18
GNA – 18 women with disabilities in the Eastern Region have been trained
in pearls to improve their livelihoods.
The training was
funded by DANIDA, in collaboration with the Ghana Society of Physically
People with disabilities (GSPD) and Krobodan, a Danish non-governmental organization / Krobo
Koforidua, aimed at empowering women with disabilities.
The beneficiaries were
in four districts of the region – New Juaben, Okere, Akuapem North and
Manya Krobo – and were trained during training weeks.
They received
starter kits and a little money to start their own business.
Mr. Daniel Agyekum,
the regional coordinator of the GSPD, during the graduation ceremony, said that most of the
women had no means of subsistence, which made them vulnerable, hence the
training to enable them to earn a living.
He said last year,
through collaboration, six women with disabilities were trained but with support
DANIDA, this year's number has been raised to 18 and congratulated the
Krobodan Group to facilitate the program.
Ms. Eku Sika Addo,
the president and founder of Pbadion for the Ministry of Mother and Child, who was a
Invited, urged women to effectively use the skills acquired to become
autonomous.
She advised them
against self-pity and the inferiority complex that are these behaviors, which could
to prevent them from doing anything meaningful for themselves and their families.
She urged them to
educate their children, especially girls, so that they become badets for
society rather than begging with them on the streets.
Ms. Beatrice Yeboah,
regional treasurer of the GSPD, appealed to the various districts
where the beneficiaries have been selected, to provide them with
practical spaces to carry out their pearl making activities, as they could not
to move to sell their products.
