Eighty vulnerable young women around the Bui Dam enclave, Banda district, Bono region, have undergone vocational training to improve their socio-economic livelihoods.
They included teenage mothers and pregnant women, who received six weeks of intensive training in making prayer rugs and bags.
The Bui Power Authority (BPA), managers of the Bui hydroelectric dam, funded the training.
The beneficiaries were among the identifiable Project Affected People (PAP) of the dam, who were also supported with work tools and equipment to start their own business.
Mr. Emmanuel Kwame Addo, CEO of Matamiss Pottery, an Accra-based vocational training company, said beneficiaries were able to make and sell 500 bags during the training period.
He said a market was already available for prayer bags and rugs, and advised beneficiaries to apply the skills learned to improve their lot.
He said very soon his company would open a ceramics factory in the area to create jobs for young people.
Mr. Wumbilla Salifu, Director of General Services of BPA, explained that the training was part of the Authority’s Livelihood Empowerment Program (LEP Two), which aimed to improve the socio-economic livelihoods of people. affected people.
He congratulated the interns for their commitment and advised them to take the same seriousness in their work to improve their income to support themselves and their families.
