The Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) held a memorial service on Sunday for the 165 military officers who died in a plane crash in 1992 in Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) recalls that the Nigerian Air Force C-130 plane crashed on September 26, 1992, killing all passengers and crew.
NAN also reports that this is the fourth year that the College has observed a memorial service in honor of the 165 deceased officers.
In his remarks, the College’s commanding officer, AVM Ebenezer Alade, said it was with heavy hearts that they remembered the heroes who have fallen in battle.
He said the unfortunate incident brought an abrupt end to the lives of promising officers, with a very bright future in the armed forces, lamenting that the nation has lost a generation of mid-level officers.
“It was in the service of the nation that these noble officers and men we remember today left the comforts of their homes and units after being assigned to the college and appointed to take the Senior 15 course.

“The world will not long remember the words we speak here today, but will forever remember the price paid by officers and beloved men,” he said.
According to him, the College has erected a cenotaph worthy of the names of the fallen heroes, where their families can go to remember their loved ones.
“This is to ensure that their names are not forgotten in the history of the College,” he said.
Earlier, the College’s Deputy Commander, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, said that among those who lost their lives were officers from the Republic of Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, as well as a student of the Nigerian military school, Zaria.
In her remarks, Ms Stella Onabolu, wife of one of the deceased officers, thanked the Armed Forces Command and Staff College for remembering their husbands in grand style.
“They died for the nation, and the nation remembers and recognizes them despite their death 29 years ago,” she said.
