The Ashanti Regional Police Command admitted this was a flawed assumption regarding the military deployment to Ejura, as the military was often used to frighten the crowds.
“We know that crowds always disperse when they see the military, so we assumed it would have happened, but it failed us,” he said.
The deputy commander of the Ashanti regional police, DCOP David Agyemang Adjem, answered a few questions from the committee set up to investigate the Ejura riot which left four (4) dead.
The police were reportedly overwhelmed by the crowd, hence the deployment of the army at the request of the Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah.
The chairman of the committee, His Excellency Judge George Kingsley Koomson, explained in particular how the police failed to strategize before their deployment to the scene of the riots after receiving intelligence.
DCOP Agyemang Adjem noted that police are somewhat lacking in equipment, adding that in some developed countries as well, the same is true when the going gets tough during riots or protests.
However, the police would have used tear gas in the process if he was available at the time.
The reasons for the riot have not yet been established.
