Pineapple growers with harvest: stock photo
In anticipation of the establishment of a pineapple processing plant in the region, the Pineapple Producers' Association Ekumfi Srafa expanded its farms and hoped for a good harvest.
Unfortunately, their farms were attacked by pests, which worried many of them as they see their investments fail.
Farmers have therefore called for an increase in the number of extension agents to help them buy back their farms from parasitic infestation.
They said that if their investments in farms were wasted, it would have devastating effects on them and their dependents.
Ms. Comfort Koomson, a spokeswoman for the badociation, said the parasite had attacked pineapple suckers at different stages of growth, thus affecting maximum productivity.
Disease
According to her, the disease known to local farmers as "Koyanko" is aggravated in April / May 2018.
Millipedes also attack the suckers and some fruits and devour them.
Ms. Koomson said some farmers had to eliminate the discards and replant them.
She said she was concerned about the limited number of extension agents badigned to farmers and called for strengthening of extension services in the region to help farmers reduce losses.
