Mexican drug chief Joaquin Guzman, known as "El Chapo," will likely be sent to a Colorado supermax jail after being convicted on 10 counts of drug trafficking on Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors have announced that they would ask that Guzman, who escaped twice from prison in Mexico, be sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.

Given the violent career of the drug lord, who has been carrying tons of narcotics to the United States for decades, it is likely that Guzman will be sent to a federal supermax prison.

ADX Florence was created with the intention of becoming the safest prison institution in the country, which is a good match for Guzman. This is the only supermax prison in the United States.

ADX Florence is located on a ruthless desert land south of Colorado Springs. It contains more than 400 prisoners, many of whom are convicted terrorists, gang members and criminals clbadified as too dangerous and dangerous, even for maximum security prisons.

It houses some of the world's most infamous criminals, including Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Ramzi Yousef, who planned the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. It was also home to terrorist Ted Kaczynski, 11/9 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, and Terry Nichols, an accomplice in the Oklahoma City bombing.

Despite his already extreme security, Hood believes that Guzman will be subject to "special administrative measures" to restrict visiting rights and limit his contacts with other prisoners in the institution.

"He is a person so well known that, in my opinion, he will never be allowed to stay in the yard with other prisoners until the end of his life," Hood said.

At ADX Florence, prison cells typically measure 7 feet by 12 and have a small window of about 4 inches preventing prisoners from seeing the sky. Mr Hood added that the detainees only had an hour outside each day in a small caged area.

Prisoners are allowed to read the newspaper or watch television, but Hood believes that, given the size of the drug network, Guzman will only have old newspapers and entertainment.

The former supermax guard said that these additional limitations are "designed to put a shield between [the prisoner] and the outside world, "

Mr. Hood, while working as a supermax prison warden, said he wanted to make the conditions as humane as possible, but he added, "I'm not stupid, this place was not designed in a concern for humanity, it's difficult. "

In addition to Hood, Jodi Avergun, a former US District Attorney in New York City who headed the office's Narcotics Division, NBC News that she also thinks that Guzman will receive a life sentence and will be sent to ADX Florence.

"I do not think a judge can ignore previous evidence of his break-ups and violent history," Avergun said. "The judge will not change, even if the guidelines are not mandatory."

According to Avergun, the main concern for Guzman is not whether he will escape, but whether the detainees will work to win the favor of the "legendary" drug lord and endanger other prisoners who testified against him.

She added: "Another reason why El Chapo must be separated and separated, is that there are many witnesses who cooperate in this case who need to be protected."

Guzman must be sentenced on June 25
