Sekondi MP Andrew Egyapa Mercer says the ongoing election petition filed by former President John Dramani Mahama is “a total waste of time”.
Speaking on AM on Thursday, he described the petition as “ill-conceived” and without any “legal basis.”
“From my perspective, this whole petition is a waste of everyone’s time; it will go nowhere, the evidence, the pleadings and the evidence that has been evoked [to] so far in court – let every observer take note – clearly indicates a petition that has been ill-conceived, that has no legal basis and in fact, according to my expectations, will not be upheld, ”he said. declared.
Mr. Mahama has filed an election petition with the Supreme Court to have the results quashed after losing the 2020 presidential elections to President Akufo-Addo.
He alleges that Akufo-Addo benefited from ballot filling and miscalculations supervised and performed by the Election Commission.
The petitioner has since called two witnesses; the Secretary General of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte, senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and member of the NDC to support his claims.
However, Mr. Eygapa argued that the petition submitted to the court did not contain any substantive material to support his claim.
According to him, the only reason the panel of judges did not dismiss the petition is that the issue is a constitutional question and that judges are mandated by law to hear the case.
He added: “Let no one be mistaken that due to the fact that the court did not deal with the preliminary objection, it suggests that they agree that the petition has certain grounds. . He just wants to listen to both sides. ”
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court adjourned the case on Wednesday until Friday, February 5 to continue hearing the election petition presented by NDC standard bearer John Mahama.
