A spokesperson for John Mahama’s legal team, Dr Dominic Ayine, says he finds the lack of seriousness with which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is taking the ongoing election petition trial.
“This is a very serious issue, and our friends in the NPP are behaving as if there is nothing at stake,” said the former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice. “Everything is at stake in this file.”
He made the remarks on Wednesday February 3, 2021 based in Accra Citi TV.
He also referred to the rejection of the request filed by the former president before the Supreme Court to be allowed to inspect certain pink sheets of the Electoral Commission (EC).
Mahama, the petitioner in the election petition trial, wanted to inspect the EC’s pink leaves for comparison.
But the Court, in its judgment, found that the applicant already had the documents he requested, the request was therefore rejected.
According to Ayine, the rejection of the request by the court was “a little scary”.
Jean Mensa, the president of the Electoral Commission (EC), has since her declaration of December 9 presidential results had multiple threats on her life, revealed Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.
The disclosure by Danquah Institute founder and leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in reaction to comments by IMANI Africa president and founder Franklin Cudjoe on strengthening security around the boss of the THIS.
Franklin Cudjoe asked her to resign after the hearing of the ongoing election petition, explaining that it was unhealthy to be wary and to be guarded by “loads of soldiers” whenever she went to work.
Defending the decision to tighten Mensa’s security, Otchere-Darko said in a social media post: “… The threats to his life have escalated to the most dangerous point that any official would have to endure, for the services of security consider it appropriate to offer it the highest possible form of protection.
Mensa will soon be raising the witness stand in the ongoing election petition trial to testify to the credibility of the results she declared on December 9, 2020, which gave President Nana Akufo-Addo a new four-year term.
According to the results declared by Mensa, Akufo-Addo won the election by collecting more than 51% of the valid votes cast.
