Mr. Gowon, who hailed the presidential and national elections at the 027 Model Secondary School voting unit in Maitama, Abuja, said the polls were peaceful in all places visited in the capital.

He said: "In some places, things have gone smoothly, in places where the numbers are overwhelming, some people are still trying to vote."

He lamented however that in some places he went to watch the exercise, the card reader malfunctioned.

"The use of the card reader poses some problems. But otherwise, until here, everything is fine. Nigerians make me proud at least around the territory of the federal capital, FCT. I hope everything is over, "he added.

The counting began at the voting unit at about 3:25 pm, while loyalty supporters, local and international observers watched the exercise.

The group of Commonwealth observers led by Jakaya Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania and the observers of the African Union, was on hand during the sorting and counting of the ballot.
