Former President John Mahama was greeted with applause as he spoke out against the devastation that had halted Ayawaso West Wuogon's by-election Thursday morning.
"The guys from Ayawaso West Wuogon were armed and unchained and the Ghanaian police could not give them orders," Mahama said during an election campaign on Saturday night in the Volta region.
He criticized Ghana's National Security Task Force for its inability to control attacks. The "hooligans" who drove police cars to the polls on this fateful day were terrorizing innocent civilians and "doing nothing," he said.
"We will not tolerate that in Ghana," he exclaims. "We are for peace, but to enjoy peace, you must be vigilant."
According to Mahama, the NPP administration asked the former president to apologize for the actions that took place, but "why should I apologize? Why do not you condemn those who did it?
He continued, "We will not accept violence in this country. When chiefs of staff advise their fellow citizens, they must inform those who inculcate the violence. Not me."
