The fifth-generation Range Rover will be unveiled as a combustion engine model with hybrid technology later this year. This will be a key launch for Jaguar Land Rover due to the profitability of the current model.
Bolloré said the new version will present a new direction for Land Rover. “The new Range Rover is incredible proof of modern luxury through the design of JLR,” he said during the strategy presentation.
The electrification “will not compromise” the off-road performance of the SUV brand, Bolloré said.
JLR Design Director Gerry McGovern described the new Range Rover as “breathtakingly modern” in an interview with Automotive news Last year.
“The current generation has changed the game significantly and the next will do too,” he said. “This car will communicate a level of emotional connection that I don’t think I’ve seen before. It will be mind blowing in a very, very sophisticated way.”
The Range Rover and the slightly smaller Range Rover Sport will upgrade to JLR’s new modular longitudinal architecture. The platform enables fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid transmissions, and will eventually be used on all of Land Rover’s larger vehicles.
The electric Range Rover will compete with large luxury electric vehicles such as a new fully electric Bentley model scheduled for 2025, which will be built with brothers Audi and Porsche in Germany and is expected to have a crossover design.
It will also compete with future versions of the Tesla Model X, if Tesla decides to update the model, as well as the upcoming electric Hummer and the Cadillac Lyric in the United States.
A fully electric Range Rover would likely cost more than the current plug-in hybrid version which sells for 124,600 euros ($ 151,400) in Germany.
