Electrocuted animals at South Africa Park

Six large animals died in South Africa's largest national park after storms spilled a power cable.

A rhinoceros, a giraffe, two lions and two hyenas were electrocuted when the power line fell in Kruger National Park.

Local media reports that the giraffe and the rhinoceros died first, and that lions and hyenas were killed by a wire while they were trying to eat the carcbades.

Rangers fell on the disturbing scene as they were taking engineers to the site to restore electricity.

Isaac Phaahla, a spokesperson for the South African National Parks (SANParks), told the BBC that the animals died last Friday in the Skukuza section of the park.

"The animals were electrocuted after heavy rains and high winds that led to a power line," he said.

With nearly 20,000 km 2 (7,700 km 2), Kruger National Park is the largest wildlife sanctuary in the country.

Tuesday, a spokesman told reporters To date, four more dead animals have been reported in the park. "Two of them have been confirmed as poachers and two of them are under investigation," he said.
