It goes without saying that smoking is bad for your health and most smokers try to get rid of their smoking habit. In fact, studies have shown that almost 7 in 10 smokers make an effort to quit. One of the main reasons you should quit smoking is that it leads to death from heart disease and more. However, some people are often tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes and other vaping devices). But it turns out that electronic cigarettes can be just as harmful. Researchers have found that the long-term effects of smoking electronic cigarettes are as bad as smoking traditional cigarettes.
According to research presented in International Congress of the European Respiratory Society, electronic cigarettes containing nicotine cause an increase in blood clots and a decrease in the ability of small blood vessels to dilate and dilate, as well as an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
Smoking e-cigarettes dramatically increases the risk of blood clots
A blood clot is a collection of blood that has solidified from a liquid state. Coagulation is an essential procedure that helps you avoid losing too much blood in certain situations, such as when you have been cut or injured. When a clot forms in one of your veins, it may not completely disintegrate on its own. This can be an extremely serious, potentially fatal scenario. The study found that the effects of e-cigarettes were similar to those caused by consuming traditional cigarettes, and that it can even lead to heart disease and stroke with long-term use.
For the study, the team looked at a group of 22 women and men between the ages of 18 and 45 who were occasional but otherwise healthy smokers. Each volunteer was tested before and after pulling 30 times on an e-cigarette containing nicotine and 30 times on an e-cigarette without nicotine. These two tests were done at least one week apart on separate occasions. They took a blood sample and assessed the participants’ heart rate and blood pressure before smoking e-cigarettes, and then at 15-minute and 60-minute intervals.
The researchers also conducted studies to see if there was an effect on blood flow through the body’s tiny blood vessels before and after the volunteers smoked e-cigarettes. When the researchers compared the test results, they found that the use of e-cigarettes containing nicotine caused a series of immediate, short-term alterations in the volunteers. After 15 minutes, Dr Lyytinen and his team detected a 23% increase in blood clots, which returned to normal after 60 minutes. According to the results of the study, the heart rate of the volunteers also increased from 66 to 73 beats per minute / bpm and blood pressure (from 108 to 117 millimeters of mercury / mmHg). Researchers found that after using e-cigarettes that contained nicotine, participants’ blood arteries momentarily narrowed.
Electronic cigarettes are not a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes
Explaining further the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes, Dr Vikas Maurya, Director and Head of the Respiratory Department at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, says: “Electronic cigarettes contain nicotine and solvents which are both carcinogenic. and can cause high blood pressure This happens because the substances in nicotine mix with our cells at a very basic stage and lead to the buildup of plaque which can cause the arteries to narrow and lead to heart attacks or strokes . ”
“The fact that e-cigarettes can cause clots is why it is not a safe alternative to a normal cigarette. So my advice would be that if you are addicted to nicotine in any form you immediately benefit from the nicotine. smoking cessation services, and you can also use the national stop line number and get help. Also remember that e-cigs are banned in India and should not be used “, he added.
