The lord of the traditional area of Kusaug in the Upper East region, Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, called on religious leaders, opinion leaders, NGOs, traditional authorities and the government to unite to eliminate old and bad practices that are contrary to the progress and growth of society.
Naba Azoka II said that the various chiefs, working with the government to promote cultural development, find it important to review some practices that do not stand the test of time and appear to reverse the wheel of progress of the traditional area.
Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, mentioned early marriages, child trafficking and abuse, widowhood rites, expensive funerals, among others, are factors that delay progress.
Naba Azoka II was speaking at this year’s 33rd annual Samanpiid festival in Bawku.
The Samanpiid festival is celebrated by the chiefs and people of the Kusaasi tribe to thank their ancestors for their successful agriculture and peaceful year.
Every year the Samanpiid festival is used to bring people together to discuss the path of development and peaceful coexistence.
Even though the discharge from the Bagre and Kompienga dams, coupled with torrential rains, affected lives and properties in the traditional area, Bawku Naba noted that there was a need to be grateful for people’s lives while at the same time praying for a better season next year.
Naba Azoka II praised key actors such as the Bawku Interethnic Peace Committee, the MMDCE in Kusaug, security personnel and civil society groups for their role in strengthening peace efforts, before and after the presidential elections and parliamentarians of 2020.
Zugraana called for mutual understanding among all ethnic groups to coexist peacefully in the traditional area to develop Bawku.
Naba Azoka II noted that the fate of his subjects is the result of the many unfinished projects in the traditional area which negatively affects businesses.
Among the projects are the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmako road, Tamne irrigation dam, rural electrification, Sapelliga community day school, among others.
The Zugraana however thanked the government for social intervention policies such as planting for food and employment, a village a dam, a district a factory, a district a warehouse, among others.
