President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed the former Deputy Regional Minister of Greater Accra, Ms. Elizabeth Sackey, as Mayor of Accra.
She will succeed Mohammed Adjei Sowah, who has held this position since 2017.
His name was on the list of metropolitan, municipal and district general managers released by the Minister of Local Government Dan Botwe on Sunday, September 19, 2021.
Before the list was made public, some NPP youth from Odododiodoo constituency held a demonstration on Saturday, September 18, 2021 to express their discontent.
The Ghanaian Police Service four leaders of the protest were subsequently arrested.
The outgoing mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, later condemned the protest.
He also disassociated himself from the incident and urged his supporters to respect President Akufo-Addo’s decision.
In a statement, he declared his support for anyone who appoints President Akufo-Addo.
“We should recognize the authority of the President to appoint people of his choice to promote his agenda, and it is our duty to support those nominated to be successful… I fully support all nominations of the President and pledge to continue to work for the development of the country, ”he said. Elizabeth Sackey was a former MP for Okaikwei North on the NPP ticket.
She is originally from Asere-Accra in the Greater Accra region and was born on May 6, 1958.
Economist, she holds a Certificate in Marketing which she obtained in 2003.
As a banker, she worked with Ghana Commercial Bank as a chief clerk before becoming an MP.
She is Christian and fraternal with the Church of Pentecost and is married with four children.
