Elton John has announced that he was recently injured in a fall and postponed many UK tour dates as he recovers.

In a statement, he said:

At the end of my summer vacation I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and since then have experienced considerable pain and discomfort in my hip. Despite intensive physiotherapy and specialized treatment, the pain has continued to worsen and causes increasing difficulty in moving. I was advised to have the operation as soon as possible to get back into great shape and to make sure there are no long-term complications. I will be embarking on an intensive physiotherapy program that will ensure full recovery and a return to full mobility without pain.

The 22 UK Arena dates, which are slated to start with nine nights at the O2 Arena in London on November 14, will now begin in April 2023.

Elton, 74, will still perform at Global Citizen Live, a multi-city charity event on September 25, for which he will perform five songs.

He added: “I know how patient my amazing fans have been since Covid stopped touring last year, and it breaks my heart to keep you waiting any longer. I completely feel your frustrations after the year we have had. I promise – the shows will be back on the road next year and I’ll make sure they’re well worth the wait.

The postponements extend a tour that Elton says is his last. It was announced in 2018 and was due to end in December 2020, but the pandemic caused a long run of shows to be postponed. Elton recently added 31 more stadium dates in the US, Europe and UK for the summer of 2022.

He will release a new album, The Lockdown Sessions, on October 22, recorded with stars such as Dua Lipa, Stevie Wonder, Lil Nas X and Stevie Nicks remotely or socially during the pandemic.
