Premier League footballer, Emiliano Sala, was in a light aircraft that disappeared over the Channel Islands, announced the French Civil Aviation Authority.
The Argentine striker was one of two people aboard the Malibu Piper who lost touch off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night.
The city of Cardiff on Saturday recruited the French club Nantes for a record sum of 15 million pounds.
Guernsey police said there was "no trace" of the plane bound for Cardiff.

He left Nantes at 19:15 and was flying at 5,000 feet altitude when he contacted Jersey air traffic control to request a descent, Force announced.
The plane lost touch at 2300 feet.
Red searches were observed when looking for a lifeboat and helicopter, but "nothing of significance was found," said a spokeswoman for Channel Islands Air Search.

Police said on Tuesday that more than 1,000 square kilometers were searched by five planes and two lifeboats. The search resumed after being interrupted all night "due to strong winds, worsening sea conditions and reduced visibility".
Cardiff airport confirmed that the plane was due to arrive from Nantes but a spokeswoman said there were no more details.
Captain David Barker, Guernsey Harbor Captain, said that no distress call had been received.
"It's much easier to see something on the surface in broad daylight," he said. "We are looking for any trace of plane, life raft, people in the water, lifejackets."
The Met Office said the conditions were not "too intense" by the time the plane disappeared, but had become wetter and windier later in the evening.

Cardiff signed a contract with Sala for a club record after prolonged negotiations with Nantes. He had to join his new teammates Tuesday to train.
He is one of the best scorers in France in recent years and has scored 13 goals in World Cup and Cup this season, third behind Kylian Mbappe and Nicolas Pepe.
