ABU DHABI, May 1, 2019 (WAM) – The Global Polio Eradication Initiative today launched the Polio Strategy 2019-20231, which will guide the program and its partners in the fight against the last obstacles to the eradication and the continuation of the maintenance of the future polio.
In order to support the strategy and to encourage additional commitments, a fundraising event will be held in November at the "Reaching the Last Kilometer" forum in Abu Dhabi, bringing together leaders every two years. global health space.
The event will be organized with the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates, long-standing champion of the wrestling program against polio.
The new plan resolves the most pressing problems of ending poliovirus transmission, integrates the resources of the polio program into development and health programs around the world, and certifies the absence of poliomyelitis in the world.
In addition to building on the program's core strategies to expand access to immunization and improve surveillance around the world, the 2019-2023 final phase strategy offers responsive and innovative solutions tailored to community needs.
This includes the establishment of a regional center in Amman, Jordan, to strengthen the coordination of support for Afghanistan and Pakistan and to establish permanent rapid response teams to accelerate the response of the Government of Afghanistan. program to epidemics.
The program will also aim to improve immunization coverage and meet basic development needs by strengthening collaboration with immunization partners such as Gavi, Vaccine Alliance and the humanitarian and emergency response communities.
To achieve its goals and achieve eradication, the final phase strategy requires a budget of US $ 4.2 billion, of which US $ 3.27 billion will be mobilized by the Global Initiative for HIV / AIDS. Poliomyelitis Eradication (GPEI).
The strategy for the 2019-2023 final phase builds on the 2013-2018 strategic plan, which brought the world to the brink of polio eradication. Despite this impressive progress, the last stages of eradication proved to be the most difficult. Transmission of wild poliovirus continues in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and outbreaks of vaccine-derived polioviruses are underway in several countries in Africa and Asia.
To meet these challenges, the new strategy must be fully implemented with sufficient resources and commitments from governments, donors, multilateral organizations and local communities.
The strategy for the final phase of polio 2019-2023 will be discussed at the next 2019 World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland on May 20th.
