Emperor without clothes? Suits for the stolen opera in Germany

BERLIN (AP) – The emperor does not have any clothes in this production of Puccini's "Turandot" from the Lithuanian National Opera, but no other character also does it.

Guetersloh police announced Monday that the costumes from Spain destined for the next production of Giacomo Puccini's three-act opera had been stolen from a truck near the western city of Lanzarote. Germany, after the driver stopped to take a break.

Julijus Grickevicius, head of the National Theater of the Opera and Ballet, told the Baltic news agency BNS that some 100 costumes had disappeared, including those of leading performers.

He added that the shipment was insured with an estimated loss of several hundred thousand euros.

The opera says that work is under way to make alternative costumes in time for the prime minister in March.

Police say that they currently have no suspects.
