Empire trailer: Shabana Azmi’s star series Kunal Kapoor is India’s answer to Game of Thrones

The trailer for Disney Plus Hotstar’s upcoming original series, The Empire, has been released. The two-minute-plus trailer features actor Kunal Kapoor as Mughal Emperor Zahir ud-Din Muhammad Babur and his battle against threatening enemies and huge armies to protect his dynasty, and even his life. .

At first glance, the series looks like a visual extravaganza filled with a gripping narrative. The action sequences are impressive. Shot in several locations in India and Uzbekistan, The Empire features elaborate sets and sweeping landscapes. The 8-episode series is based on Empire of the Moghul: Raiders from the North by Alex Rutherford.

The official synopsis for the series reads: “The King of Ferghana dies in an accident and a young prince is now tasked with taking the throne. The historical drama has a strong cast including actors Shabana Azmi, Drashti Dhami, Dino Morea, Aditya Seal, Sahher Bambba and Rahul Dev, among others. Created by Nikkhil Advani, it marks the directorial debut of Mitakshara Kumar who also co-wrote the screenplay for the epic saga.

Speaking of his character Babur, Kunal Kapoor said, “We have heard a lot of stories about Babur and the Mughals, but very little about who they were, where they came from and how they came to India. In this fictional take, he’s a character with a lot of complexities, and that’s what intrigued me as an actor. The trailer is just a small glimpse into the world of The Empire.

Shabana Azmi considers her role to be “fierce” and “confident” in the series. “For many years I have been fascinated by Imperial lives drawn from the pages of history. We have seen and read many stories, but the ones I love the most are the ones where women play strategic roles; much like my character in The Empire – she’s fierce, confident and knows what she wants. I hope the audience will enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed playing it, ”she said of her role.

The Empire will begin streaming on Disney + Hotstar starting August 27.
