Efutu MP Alexander Afenyo Markin called on stakeholders in the stalemate of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), to adopt a reconciliation path to end to the crisis that rages in the university.

The university, located in Winneba in Efutu district, in the central region, was shut down for nearly a month after student protest over the dismissal of some lecturers and staff members by Vice Chancellor Very Rev. Anthony Afful-Broni.

However, the MP said that the decision to reinstate only three of the speakers did not reflect the consensus reached by the stakeholders.

Mr. Afenyo Markin told reporters, at a mini press conference held in Parliament, Accra: "We need a university of peaceful education", and urged the vice – Chancellor to be ready, with a reconciling approach, so put an end to the stalemate.

The member expressed his dissatisfaction with this approach, which he described as a semi-elaborate solution to the leadership crisis.

"The argument was that these people were victims of violence. If you study each case, you will know that someone like Akwasi, for example, was suspended for simply sending a WhatsApp message, "he said.

University students have expressed doubts about the leadership style of the vice chancellor and have described him as authoritarian.

The problems at the University resulted from a legal dispute, after a ban in 2017, which had resulted in the dismissal of the former vice-chancellor, Professor Mawutor Avoke, in 2018 by the Board of Governors .

The school, which was closed after the student protest, is expected to resume operations on April 8, 2019.
