An effort to get people fit and healthy this summer was launched by Public Health England (PHE), as research found more than 40% of adults were gaining weight during the lockdown.
The latest Better Health campaign, the third iteration, includes the updated NHS Weight Loss Plan, an app to help reduce alcohol consumption and measure BMI.
The launch comes as a national survey of more than 5,000 adults in England on behalf of PHE found that 41% said they had gained weight since the first lockdown in March 2020.
Those who reported gaining weight gained almost half a stone (4.1 kg) on average, and 21% reported taking a stone or more.
Among those aged 35 to 65, the average weight gain was over 10 lbs (4.6 kg).
For 46% of those who said they gained weight, snacking and comfort meals were the main culprits.
Of those who have gained weight since March 2020, 89% said it is important for them to adopt new, healthier habits this summer. Almost half said they wanted to eat healthier, and 57% welcomed additional healthier eating tips, ideas for doing it on a budget, and exercise programs.
Dr Alison Tedstone, Chief Nutritionist at PHE, said: “Over the past 16 months, many have changed their habits, so it’s no surprise to see so many people reporting weight gain.
“We know how difficult it can be to lose weight and keep it off. So we offer a range of support options to motivate people and help them maintain a healthy weight. “
PHE also works with local authorities to provide weight management support for people.
According to PHE, the fall launch of the new Office of Health Promotion will lead national efforts to “improve the health of the nation” by continuing to support people with obesity, support mental health and promote physical activity.
Public Health Minister Jo Churchill said, “We want to make it easier for people to live healthier lifestyles that are right for them.
“Our new Office of Health Promotion will continue to build on the success of this campaign, helping people make lifestyle choices that improve their mental and physical health. “
As part of the campaign, actress Linda Robson spoke about her experience of gaining more than a stone during lockdown and how she uses healthy eating to lose weight.
