EThe health secretary will announce today that the country will be the first country in the world not to have new HIV cases.
Matt Hanbad will say today at a global summit that the goal is "now within our reach", the capital already exceeding the goals set by the United Nations.
The health secretary said that medical advances, including drugs to treat and prevent the spread of the disease, meant that AIDS was no longer a death sentence.
Since 2012, the estimated number of new infections contracted by homobadual and bibadual men has more than halved, dropping from a peak of about 2,700 in 2012 to 1,200 in 2017.
Of those diagnosed, 96% are currently on treatment and 94% have an "undetectable viral load", where virus levels are so low that they can not be transmitted.
New diagnoses dropped by about 77% among black African and Black Caribbean, and by 31% among white heterobadual men, according to official figures.
