Enumerators in Ashanti region refuse to be vaccinated

Authorities of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Ashanti region have sent a desperate appeal to people who have worked as enumerators on the just completed population and housing census to take advantage of the second Sputnik V vaccine as they race against the clock to keep doses from expiring.

Up to 900 doses of vaccine are still in the refrigerators, waiting to be administered to census officials who had already received injections from the first shipment of vaccine in March, before being deployed to the national mission in June.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Ashanti’s regional health promotion manager Felix Frimpong said every effort was made to have enumerators in the 43 Ashanti region districts avail themselves of the second doses. vaccines have proved futile.

He wondered if resistance to calls for a full vaccine was not investigators’ own way of protesting payment for work done in the population and housing census.

“We call on all enumerators in the Ashanti region to return to where they made their first jabs in their different districts to get the second and last; we have reserved 900 doses of Sputnik V vaccine for you; we risk losing them until expiration if you fail to get them, ”he said.

Meanwhile, the 6-day vaccination program for Johnson & Johnson vaccines ended yesterday in the Ashanti region; many have, however, been left in long queues as the 50,400 doses received for use in four districts run out.
