Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, executive director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), called for recycling waste to generate income and foster a clean environment.
“This is what the EPA advocates; use technology and innovations to create wealth from waste… and we are sure to rid the country of these nuisances which torment us and make us richer, ”said Dr Kokofu during a visit to Recyclers Ghana Limited in Shai Hills near Tema.
The visit by the EPA executive director and other officials was part of the EPA’s plan to periodically tour industries to determine the degree of compliance with environmental safety standards.
Dr Kokofu said that Recyclers Ghana Limited is doing well in recycling waste and removing harmful substances like lead from the environment.
He explained that lead is a heavy metal, which is not good for human consumption.
“Factories like this are on the right track and should be encouraged; it is also a business for those who collect these materials and sell them to the company.
“It tells all of us that you don’t throw trash, don’t throw these things indiscriminately; you can put them somewhere, some people would buy such items from you and donate them to companies like this, ”advised Dr Kokofu.
He also called on the company to open up to the public to allow people to participate in the supply chain.
Dr Kokofu said the EPA will study the measures the company has taken to ensure environmental safety and recommend the same to other companies.
As part of the visit, Dr Kokofu and company officials planted trees to signal the start of operations and to show the extent of EPA approval of their operations.
