July 7, 2019 – Yemen's Ministry of Public Health and Population reported 20,877 suspected cholera cases with 19 badociated deaths during Epidemiological Week 25 (June 17-23) in 2019. Thirteen percent of cases were serious. The cumulative total number of suspected cholera cases from January 1, 2018 to June 23, 2019 is 863,815, with 1197 badociated deaths (baseline baseline of 0.13%). Children under five account for 23.0% of the total number of suspected cases in 2019. The outbreak affected 22 out of 23 governorates and 299 out of 333 districts in Yemen.
By the eighth week of 2019, the trend of suspected cholera cases reported each week began to increase, reaching a peak of 29,500 in week 14. The trend in suspected cases at the country level has fluctuated in recent weeks: first a decline, then a stable trend and finally an increase. From week 23 to week 25, the national trend in suspected cases is stable.
The governorates reporting the highest number of suspected cholera cases in 2019 are Amanat Al Asimah (65,030), Sanaa (52,472), Al Hudaydah (46,877), Ibb (39,450), Dhamar (38,714) and Arman ( 32,437).
Of a total of 75,732 samples tested since January 2019, 3508 were confirmed positive for cholera by culture in central public health laboratories. During the reporting period, the governorates reporting the highest number of positive cultures were Amanat Al Asimah (1029), Taizz (819) and Sana'a (400).
WHO continues to lead and support activities with health authorities and partners to address this cholera outbreak, including case management, surveillance and laboratory badysis, mapping hot spots and OCV campaign planning, water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH), and risk communication. .
