Summary of the situation
In 2021, between epidemiological week (SE) 1 and SE 38, two countries in the Region of the Americas reported confirmed cases of measles: Brazil with 552 confirmed cases, including 2 deaths in 6 federal units; and the United States of America with 20 confirmed measles cases in 3 jurisdictions, including 18 cases reported among recent evacuees from Afghanistan during the resettlement process.
In 2020, a total of 9 countries in the Region of the Americas reported measles cases and deaths.
PAHO / WHO monitored the impact of the pandemic on immunization coverage in the Region.
Regarding, comparing the period from January to May 2019 with the same period in 2020 and 2021, a decrease in the number of doses of MMR12 was observed in May 2020 (by 22% compared to the same period in 2019) and 2021 (by 18% compared to the same period in 2020) (Figure 1). Likewise, in 2020, the weekly notification of suspected cases of measles and rubella decreases by 73% compared to 2019.
