According to the results announced this week, the AKP of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lost control of Istanbul, the country's financial capital. He also lost the capital Ankara, where the Republican People's Party (CHP) had won more than 50% of the vote.

AKP officials in both cities announced on Tuesday the objections to the results.

At a press conference, Bayram Senocak, the highest party official in Istanbul, announced his party's objection against the results in 39 constituencies.

"We detected huge differences between the signed and stamped registers according to which the counted votes came in first and the numbers submitted to the Supreme Electoral Council, and this was the subject of our appeal in opposition" , did he declare.

"In addition, we are talking about 319,570 null votes that could change the result," he added.

According to the state-run Anadolu news agency, null votes in five districts of Istanbul will now be recounted. "The decision was made by the respective district electoral councils as a result of AKP appeals," reported Anadolu.

The recount in the districts – Beykoz, Cekmekoy, Sile, Bayrampasa and Catalca – will take place on Wednesday.

AKP and its predecessor have always won local elections in Istanbul since the 1990s, when Erdogan began his political career as mayor. He has been the face of local AKP election campaigns this year, holding rallies across Turkey to support the party.

AKP challenges election results in Ankara

In Ankara, the AKP provincial president also expressed his opposition to the local results for the 25 districts of Ankara.

Hakan Han Ozcan said his party detected irregularities in 3,217 ballot boxes. "We can not allow the votes to be wasted as long as we make a huge effort to make every vote count," he said. "In many polls we have detected that the numbers of the different registers have not been added correctly."

This would be the first time in 25 years that the Islamist party would lose its grip on Ankara.

The Turkish Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) has not made any declaration on the validity of the votes cast in Istanbul and Ankara.
