Former Regional Minister Brong Ahafo, the Hon. Eric Opoku has strongly criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for its "collapse" of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Mr Opoku, who was speaking on Dwaboase on Power 97.9 FM, said the NHIS was struggling under Akufo-Addo's current government as 25% of national health insurance funds were diverted .
In addressing the challenges that the NHIS is currently facing, it revealed that it was because the NPP government was not behind the project, which explains its unstable nature. .
"The government is transferring 25% of NHIS funds to another sector. The law was pbaded by Parliament for the government to fund NHIS funds to support its other projects, such as One Village, One Dam, and its pledge of $ 1 million per constituency, "said MP, highlighting the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and 6 other statutory funds.
According to the deputy of Asunafo South in the Ahafo region, the NHIS will continue to struggle as member contributions can not meet the health needs of people under the NHIS.
"Because the NPP government is not behind the NHIS, they are collapsing. Under the Mahama administration, we managed the program well, but today it is difficult to survive because the funds are not enough to cover its expenses. Today, if you go to many SNIS offices, they can not print new membership cards because they do not have the money to print them, "he said. Opoku added.
He said the former NDC government has done its best to keep the NHIS at the service of millions of Ghanaians, but that can not be said about this government.
Mr Opoku is not the only parliamentarian to be worried about the struggles led by the NHIS.
In April of this year, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, a member of the European Parliament Health Committee, expressed similar concerns and said that the government is collapsing with this new style of management.
He told Prince Minkah, host of Ete Sen on Radio XYZ, that the system was struggling and could not pay service providers for services rendered to program subscribers for almost a year, as the government continued to 39 use the funds of the SNIS for other projects that do not comply with the fundamental mandate of the institution.
This followed a parliamentary report from the Committee of the Whole on the proposed formula for the payment of national health insurance funds for 2019, which indicated that part of the NHIS fund was used to pay the stipends of the trainee nurses.
An amount of 358.85 million GHS was paid to the Ministry of Health to help finance the National Health Insurance Scheme, but a total of 163.66 million GHS was used to pay the benefits of the health insurance scheme. trainee nurse, says the report.
Akando, who confirmed the report, also said that the NHIS funds, amounting to 238.6 billion GHS, were also used to support the Ministry of Health and sometimes to build educational infrastructure. NHIS.
"It's outrageous and unacceptable because the ministry [of Health] should rather support the NHIS, "he added.
"I am not against the payment of compensation. He promised to pay the benefits. I did not make that promise, but the president should not use the NHIS fund.
"The NHIS money is not meant to support the Ministry of Health, the purchase of anti-snake venom, the payment of nurse trainee allowances, and the building of schools."
He added that the number of subscribers to the NHIS had declined since the takeover of power by the nuclear power plant, indicating that the population was not satisfied with the program's services.
