Erin Cuthbert column: Scottish striker in Paris, Piccadilly Circus & Argentina

Scottish striker Erin Cuthbert will write articles for the BBC Sport website this summer, as the national team takes part in its first World Cup.

I do this column in a taxi, stuck in Parisian traffic, trying to return to the hotel teams. I will be honest, I do not know where I am or where I am going, so I hope the driver will do it … or else the security guards will have to pick me up.

It is a luxury that most tourists do not have and that is what the team has been today: tourists. We arrived in Rennes from Rennes and, after a morning of training and recovery for some girls, we were all driven into the city for the afternoon and we separated to do everything what we wanted to do. I had already come here when I was very young, but I wanted to take a look at the Eiffel Tower and cross the Arc de Triomphe. The sun was shining and I spotted a few fans of the Tartan army, so it was a good day.

Some of us took the last minute decision to travel to the United States v Chile game – it was cool to watch a World Cup match as a fan and to feel a little bit the effervescence that surrounds it. I know that some players like to turn away from football at tournaments like this, and I have not immersed myself in the game. But I love watching football. I've had matches in the background to make sure I do not lose my eye. on them without being too invested.

Apart from that, I try to stay in a bubble. I went on social media to publish strange things, but I did not scroll down my timeline or anything like that. One thing I noticed was that my face was stuck on Piccadilly Circus. I mean, come on, you could not miss it … it's huge!

I would never have imagined seeing my face on a billboard in one of the busiest places in London. Note that I would not have imagined seeing it in Eglinton Street in Irvine either, and it's just as cool, though a little closer to my heart.

The attention was not good, however, and as players, we were aware of some criticism after the match against Japan. It seems to me that there was a preconceived idea that we were going to get away against England and Japan, which are two of the best teams in the world. I guess it's this Scottish "gallus" attitude that emerges. But these expectations come only because we have succeeded and people think we can be competitive at this level, so that's a compliment.

I'm just trying to take a little distance and use it as a motivation to turn a negative into a positive one. The match against Japan was a disappointment. We should have had some penalties and I am always treated for an ankle injury after one of these challenges. But everything happened in Wednesday's match against Argentina, as we had always thought.

I'm really excited for that. You may think that I would be desperate to have a goal after being squeezed a few times in the first two games, but I only want three points. Argentina will hope for its chances after scoring a point with Japan and narrowly lost against England because if it beats us, it can still finish second. Let's be honest, I was a little surprised at how good they were and that their rankings do not do them justice, so it will be a really tough match.

I know some people will have looked at all the difference items in the other groups to determine what we need to do to finish among the top teams in third place, but we just have to win. If you start worrying about what you can not control, it can affect you. All we can do is get the three points, pause, then do the math. And if we do that, I think we'll have an extra day to enjoy our stay in Paris until we see if we've done enough …
