Ethiopian troops killed senior officials of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) during an operation, according to an announcement Thursday evening.

Among those killed were TPLF spokesman Sekoture Getachew and Daniel Assefa, former head of the Tigray finance office.

Zeray Asgedom, the former head of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority, and Abebe Asgedom were also killed in the operation.

In a statement, the head of the Defense Force Deployment Department, General Tesfaye Aylew, said nine other TPLF leaders were also arrested.

They are Kidusan Nega, former president of the region, Ambassador Abadi Zemu, former Ethiopian Ambassador to Sudan, Solomon Kidane, Teklewayini Assefa, Gebremedhin Tewolde, Woldegiorgis Desta, Tewodros Hagos and Mihret Teklay.

The government issued arrest warrants in November against more than 60 senior TPLF leaders.

It is not known where many TPLF leaders are located – including its chairman Debrestion Gebremichael.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced in November the end of a military offensive in Tigray state after its regional capital, Mekelle, fell to the federal army.
