Ethiopia is helping 541 stranded nationals in Tanzania obtain travel documents and return home, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
Each year, hundreds of Ethiopian migrants are arrested or found stranded in Tanzania while traveling to South Africa.
"We are finalizing preparations for the return of our 541 Tanzanian nationals, who have already received the necessary travel documents to return to Ethiopia in the coming days," said Nebiat Getachew, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition, Tanzania agreed last week to release 1,900 Ethiopian prisoners, according to a statement from the Ethiopian embbady that did not explain in detail why they were detained.
In recent years, the Ethiopian authorities have attempted to quell the illegal immigration of their citizens by toughening laws against human trafficking and spreading advertisements warning against the dangers of illegal immigration.
Thousands of Ethiopians nevertheless continue to attempt to migrate to South Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the European continent.
Landlocked Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa, with more than 100 million inhabitants, and the fastest growing in the region, but remains one of the poorest, with 24% of the population living below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.
