European competition regulators will investigate Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, to determine whether its use of other merchant data violates competition rules, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said that the EU had opened an investigation to determine how Amazon used data from independent retailers selling in the company's market. The investigation focuses on Amazon's "dual role" as a retailer and market, Vestager said.

"Based on the Commission's preliminary investigation, Amazon seems to use sensitive information about the competition – about market sellers, their products and their market transactions," said Vestager.

In a statement, Amazon said: "We will cooperate fully with the European Commission and continue our efforts to support businesses of all sizes and help them grow."
