The United Kingdom, Spain and France announced Monday that they recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's interim president.

European countries warned last week that if Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro does not call for new elections by the end of Sunday, they will officially recognize Guaido as the country's self-proclaimed leader.

"Nicolas Maduro has not called for a presidential election within the 8 days we have set.The UK and its European allies now recognize @jguaido as acting constitutional president until credible elections Hopefully this will bring us closer to the humanitarian crisis "Minister Jeremy Hunt tweeted Monday.

Guaido, the leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly in Venezuela, declared himself acting president on January 23, citing a constitutional rule to open a rare challenge to Maduro's claim on the Presidency.

Claudia Rebaza, Arnaud Siad and Stephanie Halasz contributed to this report.
