Exit polls in Sunday's European elections showed that French President Emmanuel Macron's party was in second place behind the far-right party of the National Rally led by Marine Le Pen. Voter turnout increased by about 10 points compared to the last European elections of 2014.
Early results estimated that the RN would receive 23.2% of the vote, or more than 21.9% for the Renaissance list combining Macron's Republic of the Move and Centrist Modem.
The final results had to be confirmed later in the evening.
The Republicans, right, get 11 to 13% of the vote, while France Unbowed and the Green Party, left party, would get 7 to 8% of the vote.
The Socialist Party had to eliminate the 5% threshold required to send part of its list to the European Parliament.
The French vote was also marked by an increase in the turnout, with participation to be between 52% and 54%, against 43% in the last European elections of 2014.
