Organizers say two million people participated in a demonstration in Hong Kong, the latest major protest against a controversial extradition bill.
But what did the protests on the ground look like?
We collected images taken short of each other and showing the extent of the crowds in Hong Kong on Sunday.
The photographs numbered below correspond to the locations of the map. They were all taken while the crowd was crossing the city.
Victoria Park – meeting point
Taken shortly before the official start of the march at 2:30 pm local time, it was the crowd gathering area. Others arrived for hours because the train stations were overcrowded and people could not reach the city.
It took hours for the park to clear – but more than four hours later, there was a steady stream of dozens of people leaving the area to catch the tail of the walk.
Paterson Street
The recognizable ring at the base of the Paterson Street light rail station is visible here, while Victoria Park crowds intensified along Yee Wo Street towards Hennessy Road, which was the main road.
Sogo Hennessy Road
Sogo Department Store in Causeway Bay is located at the junction of Yee Wo Street and three side streets – a natural meeting point for the crowd. The police largely left the crowds in the adjacent streets along the road.
Hysan Place
Hysan Place, just down the road from Sogo, shows the crowds that extend in several directions. Sometimes, the considerable number of people on the road has slowed down. This photo was taken more than two hours after the start of the walk, just 500 meters from the starting point.
Looking back at the Cbad Road flyover
The shadow of the flyover of the cbad road is visible just at the top of the photo, while the walk continued on the main artery.
Hennessy Road near Wan Chai
Wan Chai, the busy shopping district, was next. This street usually accommodates two to three lanes of traffic in both directions, plus the tram system in the center – but not on Sundays.
Admiralty – Commemoration held
This photo was taken earlier in the day, as supporters formed a long queue at Pacific Place to drop flowers on the site where a protester died the night before. The man fell from a scaffolding, he had gone up and stayed there for hours, after unfurling a banner against the extradition law. The march would later weave through the region, known as the Admiralty, before heading to government buildings.
Legislative Council Complex – End Point of the Gathering
The first arrivals in the legislative buildings – the final point of the rally – took place shortly after the start of the march. But those behind it took hours to walk packed streets, with crowd control in the stations. Large crowds were still present in the central streets of the city well after dark.
