Everton fans shared a host of heartfelt messages after Phil Jagielka confirmed his departure from the club.

The future of the captain of the Blues had been an important topic of discussion during the final stages of the last term, the current contract of the defender with the club ending this summer.

But the 36-year-old put an end to rumors Tuesday afternoon by confirming that he would leave Goodison Park after 12 years at the club.

Jagielka played more than 380 appearances with Everton after joining in 2007 and has been captain of his club since 2013.

The defender's career with the Blues has been marked by many highlights, including with his pilot Piledriver in a Merseyside derby in 2014 and his winning penalty in a shootout against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals of 2009.

Thank you for everything you said, you have been a brilliant player for this football club. Thank you for this goal at Anfield, but most importantly, for the purpose of Wembley, my happiest memory ever recorded at Everton.

The right decision for both Everton and Jags, even though I'm still a bit tired, a true Blues field leader gave everything when he entered the field.

Gutted we never saw him raise a trophy in the blue shirt.

Good luck jags

Phil Jagielka. He never really got the merit he deserved from some fans, but what player, captain and incredible servant he was to Everton.

I'm actually gutted to see him go and just as keen we could never see him raise a trophy for us @ PJags06

Sad to see the release of Phil Jagielka to Everton confirmed. One of the best advocates we have had in the modern era.

Not only will this be remembered, but important goals, loyalty and club captain.
